“Can Expression be Taught? The Pedagogy of Alain Marion, in his own voice.”
National Flute Association National Convention, Kansas City
Can expression be taught? As flute professor at the Paris Conservatory, Alain Marion established himself as one of the leading pedagogues of the 20th century French School and proved that the answer to this age-old question is YES. Known for his dynamic teaching that elevated students to their peak performances, transforming emotional energy into sound, Marion was not only a master of what to teach, but how to teach. This presentation will analyze the successful elements of Marion’s pedagogy based on four summers and two years of lessons I attended as Marion’s student. The discussion will include excerpts from over eleven hours of recorded lessons with Marion (Paris, 1995-1997), translated into English where necessary, so that the audience can discover Marion’s teaching in his own voice. The audio lessons include Marion’s interpretation of pieces such as Roussel’s Joueurs de Flute, Schumann’s Three Romances, and Katherine Hoover’s Medieval Suite. I will provide background and commentary on issues such as Marion’s class environment, lesson pacing, nonverbal communication, instinctive approach to technique, and imitation based learning. This presentation will be dedicated to Marion as August 16, 2008 will mark ten years since his death.
